Does an electric battery or container of the same size filled with compressed hydrogen contain more energy?

I'm theorizing about why knowledgeable people would convert water to hydrogen when it cost 20-50 percent more energy than the hydrogen contains. If it's not more dense than an electrical battery, than it can be concluded that it's totally pointless to do so.

I mean, the electricity used to convert the stuff over is polluting the environment too, because it originates from coal burning.

Lithium Ion batteries would likely be 250 WH/l whereas commercially available compressed hydrogen which is compressed to 150 bar (2,200 psi) would have an energy density of 405 WH/l. Gasoline has an energy density over 9,000 WH/l. If you are going to chemically store energy, you should use the energy to synthesize gasoline from CO2 and H2O.

When Sandia Labs set out to store energy as hydrogen, they concluded that it would be just as easy to do so with linear hydrocabons such as gasoline and diesel. Note that it takes a lot more energy to charge a battery then a battery will hold. For lead acid batteries, it takes twice the amount of energy to charge it then it holds. Remember that a battery will run down even when not used while energy chemically stored as hydrocarbons doesn't self discharge.

Basically when knowledgeable people such as the researchers at Sandia Labs considered storing energy by producing hydrogen from water, they concluded that it would be better to store that energy as hydrocarbons by the same processes. It's only people who are not knowledgeable and only remember the grade school electrolysis demonstration that think hydrogen is an effective energy storage medium.
