Electric field inside a Nichrome wire?
A Nichrome wire 88 cm long and 0.25 mm in diameter is connected to a 1.3 volt flashlight battery. What is the electric field inside the wire?
The answer is in v/m, but the volume is m^3, so you can't just divide by the voles by the volume. Do I use the radius or the length? I think length because radius is m^2, but can anyone verify for me?
The Nichrome wire is replaced by a wire of the same length and diameter, and same mobile electron density but with electron mobility 4 times as large as that of Nichrome. Now what is the electric field inside the wire?
i = naME
i = current
n = electron densirt
a = area
M = electron mobility
E = electric field
thankz
[Fish]: first one is right and second one is wrong. Thanks anyways.
I would assume that you would use the length, since its units are in meters.
E = V/m = 1.3/0.88 = 1.48 V/m
[Edit]: I thought it would be. I did some research and found that the electric field is independent of the mobile electron mobility. So even if the M is 4x greater, the E would still be equal to 1.48 V/m. However, the electron current would increase to compensate for the greater electron mobility.
Thanks for visiting!
