I'm clearing my hard drive and want it to factory settings like it is new out of the box?

I'm selling my laptop and before i ship the computer, I want to delete everything off the hard drive so they can't see my personal information and restore my computer to the original factory settings like it is new out of the box. How do I do this? I have windows vista

Ew, Vista. Haven't wanted to touch that at all.

Kudos for wanting to wipe your data from the machine first. I found a computer when I was taking out the trash three days ago. I went through it and found a guy's name, current and last physical address, his email address, his wife's email address, his phone number, his social security number, his immigration paperwork, his parents' immigration paperwork, a photo of his daughter, a resume history, and a current phone number.

Luckily for him, I'm not much one for ID theft. I DID email him to tell him what I'd found, however. I also told him I was erasing the HD.

Anyway, to make sure your computer doesn't end up like Carlos Amador's, you'll want to format the hard drive, and reinstall Vista.

There are numerous guides on how to do so, and repeating what they have said is redundant, so I will simply link one for you.
