Amp Hours: help me understand!?

I have an electric moped/scooter that goes about 60km/38miles on a single charge. The moped/scooter currently runs on a 48V/12AH Lead Acid (SLA) battery. If I buy a new battery that has increased Amp Hours, say 20AH or even 50AH, will this increase the range of my scooter dramatically? What if I was to buy a 48V/12AH Lithium Ion (Li Ion) battery? Would that increase range? Thanks very much for your help.
I forgot to mention I have a 500 Watt motor. Cheers!

well, 50 amp-hour compared to 12 amp-hour has 4 times the capacity, so it should give you 4 times the range, although the increased weight (heavier battery means more friction) will decrease that number. You can get an idea of what the added weight will do if you calculate the added weight as a percentage of the total weight, and then guess that the range would be decreased by the same percentage.

A 48V/12AH Lead Acid battery is functionally the same as a 48V/12AH Lithium Ion battery. Only if the latter is substantially lighter will you see any improvement.
