Happy Electric Mobility Scooter Owner Speaks Up

April 24, 2009 by admin

I had the opportunity to be involved in a recent Senior Expo attended by hundreds of "seasoned citizens". During the course of the day I made it a point to engage a number of attendees in conversation on non specific topics, in a non threatening way since I wasn't selling anything. One of gentlemen I spoke with was a large physically challenged individual using a three wheel electric mobility scooter, and who seemed to be getting around better than many of those who were walking. I asked him about his scooter and how he liked it, he replied that he couldn't live without it, and when I asked him where he went with it he related his daily travels and I couldn't get him to stop talking about it. Trips to the park, a grocery store several blocks away, roaming with several others scooter owners, and the list of adventures went on. I asked him who made his scooter and he said it was a Pride Scooter, and as I recall he said it had a 25 mile range on a single battery charge which seemed a little on the high side in terms of range, but besides a little exaggeration, he was trying to impress me with the fact that he could go anywhere. After he left and upon reflection it occurred to me how much these products can change the daily lives of their owners. If you have a desire to get up and go places, that's all you need, since there are products out there that can enable you to make the best of a challenging situation and enjoy life to the fullest. The < a href="http://www.scooterbargains.net/store/Store-Home/Mobility-Scooters">Mobility Scooter category has many products that can change your life.

Basic Information About Mobility Scooters

This post is focused on the basics of understanding how you acquire a mobility scooter and the different styles that are available.

For starters, you need to work with your Doctor in the process of acquiring a scooter if you expect it to be covered by Medicare. Your doctor will have all of the knowledge and know what the approval process is so you won't have to worry about the paperwork. The Medicare requirements are such that one of four types of specialty doctors needs to be involved in writing the Prescription based on a face-to-face meeting. One of the following specialists needs to be involved when a Power Mobility Device (PMD) is prescribed: An Orthopedist, Physiologist, Neurologist,or a Rheumatologist. One of these specialty Doctors will determine if you meet the physical conditions that justify a Mobility Scooter under the Medicare criteria.
There are three styles of Mobility Scooters which are different in their strengths and weaknesses:

Travel Scooter: The Travel Scooter is lightweight and can be broken down for traveling. They are light enough that a person can pick it up and place it in a vehicle.

Three Wheel Mobility Scooter: This is the most maneuverable scooter when compared to a four wheel scooter. The single front steerable wheel gives this style the capability to make tight turns which can be important when used in the home. This type can be used outdoors and has good stability.

Four Wheel Mobility Scooter: The four wheel scooter is the most stable of all of the styles that are available. This style typically can travel greater distances, has higher capacity batteries and is heavier. This is an excellent choice if the user needs to use the scooter for shopping trips. Heavy duty versions of this scooter are available which will accommodate passenger weight up to 500 lbs.
